The amount of good products going open source is outstanding. I have a feeling that as companies begin to flip due to so much saturation in a specific are (video sites), or as companies actually begin to have success in building a strong userbase, they will begin to free their code to the Internet community. Although there are social networking tools that can be created on the fly (Ning), having an open source solution that is transparent and installed in your own server is safer and offers more control needed if you are planning on building a large community site.
