Newspaper Covers from all the World

April 17, 2007 Leave a comment

I’ve found a very interesting and useful website that displays the front cover of thousands of newspapers throughout the whole world. The site is Newseum.org. This is a great tool for catching breaking news around the world. Its interface is intuitive and displays the covers by just passing the mouse on top of the desired city.

Today you can see how the news of the Virginia Massacre reached the front pages of not only all the US newspapers, but a vast amount of European newspapers.

Will we find a bottom?

Can you guess what this chart above represents? To almost any investor, perhaps this says to stay away. This, however, isn’t a stock. This chart represents the downfall of the Dollar against the Euro. At the moment of this post, the value had sunken to a mere .7386 on the dollar.

I found the need to write about this, because after commenting it to a few close people, no one had an idea of how low we’d gone. The more concerning issue is a recent announcement of China divesting from the United States, which seemed to go unperceived by the general population.  Such an action could continue to pressure the dollar for years to come. Contradictory claims that their diversification of currencies won’t affect the dollar have been proven wrong by the evident decline of the dollar. Below, you can read a few articles shedding light in the situation.

China’s Diversification Won’t Hurt Dollar, Wen Says (Update5) (Bloomberg)

Dollar share of global reserves falls in Q4 -IMF (Reuters)

Dollar falls on Chinese diversification fears (Financial Times)

At the same time that the dollar is plunging, China’s economy is thriving. Investing in China is looking more attractive every day.

How can the United States regain its investment appeal? Is this a sign of a major socioeconomic downfall for the US?

Subconscious Competition

April 11, 2007 Leave a comment

It was late at night and I see how people are starting to use one of my competitor’s website far more than mine. Traffic rises, visitor loyalty rises, and everyone is talking about my competition. I’m baffled. Their website is far inferior to mine. I begin to get desperate. Everywhere I see people using the site, I ask them “What about mine?” No one cares. Everyone is devoted to my competition. Then I think- Didn’t I buy them already? I’ve got a feeling of dissatisfaction. My eyes focus on the web page trying to identify what is so good about it. Confusion strikes. Incoherence takes over.

I wake up- this was all a dream (or nightmare). I do own that site too…

Amtrak Surcharge Ripoff

March 19, 2007 1 comment

Can a lawyer please submit a class action lawsuit against Amtrak?

Last Thursday I had to take the Amtrak on my way to Davis, CA. At the information booth, I was told that the ticket could be purchased inside the train, so I did and everything was fine. However, on my way back from Davis I boarded the train once again and this time was penalized a 55% surcharge for purchasing the ticket in the train. They informed me that I was supposed to buy the ticket at the booth after boarding the train.

First, there aren’t any signs warning about this. Second, the rules are inconsistent and contradictory. Third, I was allowed in the train without being advised on this “policy”.

What impressed me the most was they were aggressive about enforcing this surcharge but failed to check my ID. They never bothered to check my ID, yet a black man was thrown out of the train for not having any ID.

Shame on you Amtrak

Il Mulino @ Ritz Carlton Isla Verde, Puerto Rico

March 10, 2007 Leave a comment

I’ve been warming up in Puerto Rico for the last three weeks before going back to San Francisco and have to mention Il Mulino because of my outstanding experience there. Il Mulino is located inside the Ritz Carlton and is decorated with a dim light setting. They distinguish themselves the most with their attention and mastery of details. Whether you are into the 12 year old Parmesan, fine pesto sauce with homemade pasta, or a surprise confection from the manager, your expectations will most likely be exceeded.

Il Mulino goes beyond service. Go get pampered.
